New York Liberty of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) has extended Han Xu's contract to 2022, the Chinese center said on Monday.

The American club exercised the one-year option of Han's rookie "3+1" contract, which has three promised seasons until 2021 and one optional season.

Han, 2.05 meters in height, was drafted by the Liberty 14th overall in 2019, averaged 3.0 points and 0.8 rebounds in her 18 games with the team.

She went back to China's club Xinjiang in 2020 due to the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic, and led the team to the finals of the Women's Chinese Basketball Association (WCBA) where it lost to the eventual champion Inner Mongolia last Sunday.

Han said she received the letter from the Liberty on Sunday, when Xinjiang finished as the runner-up of WCBA. "I'm happy to receive the letter from the Liberty. My stats and performances with Xinjiang (this season in WCBA) said everything. This is an impetus to me, also a compliment for what I've done in 2020."

Han said it's still early to talk about when she could return to WNBA as the COVID-19 is not in control across the world, and she is bound to play at the Tokyo 2020 for the Chinese national team this summer in Japan.
